From Flight Simulation to Flight: Why We’re Supporting The Air League

What does sitting at home flying an airliner in Microsoft Flight Simulator have to do with the future of real-world aviation?

Potentially, quite a lot.

When we started building AvGeekHangar, we knew that flight simulation and aviation naturally belonged together. What has surprised us as we’ve spoken to more people, organisations and businesses is that the communities surrounding them can sometimes feel strangely disconnected.

We’d like to help close that gap.

It’s one of the reasons we’re delighted to be working with The Air League as AvGeekHangar’s charity partner.

More than a hobby

Flight simulation means different things to different people.

For some, it’s simply a fantastic hobby.

For others, it’s a way of extending an existing passion for aviation. Licensed pilots use home simulation as a tool to practise procedures and maintain familiarity. Students and trainee pilots use simulation alongside their real-world learning.

And then there’s the next generation.

Today, a young person can sit at home and experience incredibly detailed recreations of modern aircraft. They can learn about navigation, weather, aircraft systems, procedures and the basic principles behind getting an aircraft from one airport to another.

That doesn’t make somebody a pilot.

But it might make them want to become one.

The teenager learning a study-level aircraft in their bedroom today could be sitting at the controls of the aircraft taking us on holiday in years to come.

And aviation needs them.

Turning ambition into opportunity

Aviation offers an enormous range of careers, both in the air and on the ground, but getting started isn’t always easy.

For aspiring pilots in particular, the financial barriers can be significant. Training can cost substantial amounts of money, while access to funding and opportunities isn’t available equally to everyone.

That’s where organisations such as The Air League matter.

The Air League works to inspire, enable and support people pursuing opportunities within aviation and aerospace, including through scholarships and programmes designed to give young people experiences that might otherwise be beyond their reach.

Its work also reaches beyond the cockpit. The future of aviation depends on pilots, engineers, technicians and many other skilled people across aerospace and the wider industry.

Talent exists everywhere.

Opportunity doesn’t always.

Why The Air League?

There are many brilliant charities we could have approached when looking for an organisation for AvGeekHangar to support.

The Air League felt different.

From our first conversations, there was a natural recognition that the flight simulation and real-world aviation communities aren’t separate worlds.

They’re already connected.

People move between them constantly.

Aviation enthusiasts discover flight simulation. Flight simmers develop an interest in learning to fly. Pilots use simulators. Students practise at home. Young people discover aircraft through gaming and simulation before ever setting foot inside a real cockpit.

What if we could make those connections stronger?

That’s where we believe the AvGeekHangar community can help.

Connecting two communities

One of our ambitions for AvGeekHangar is to create more opportunities for the flight simulation community to discover the wider world of aviation.

Working with The Air League gives us an opportunity to highlight the routes available to people who might want to take their interest further.

That could mean introducing a young flight simmer to an opportunity they didn’t know existed.

It could mean helping somebody understand the different careers available across aviation.

It could simply mean using our platform to give The Air League another audience for its work.

And, of course, it means supporting them.

We’ll be using The Hangar to highlight The Air League’s activities and opportunities, encourage our community to get involved and help raise awareness and funds for the work they do.

You’ll also be able to meet The Air League at FSimUK 2026, providing another opportunity to discover what they do and speak directly to the people behind it.

Where could your simulator take you?

Not everybody who loves flight simulation wants to become a pilot.

Nor should they.

You don’t need a career ambition to justify spending a Sunday evening flying an A320 across Europe.

But somewhere in this community is a young person whose interest in flight simulation is the beginning of something much bigger.

They might not know what opportunities exist.

They might not believe an aviation career is achievable.

Or they might simply need somebody to give them their first opportunity.

If bringing the flight simulation and aviation communities a little closer together helps even a few of those people take their next step, that’s something worth supporting.

We’re proud to have The Air League as AvGeekHangar’s charity partner and look forward to seeing where we can take the relationship together.
